Welcome

We love March • There are several musical nudges that come to me at certain times of the year – for some reason the month of March makes me think of the great Rodgers and Hammerstein anthem that is now forever linked with the city of Liverpool. In my head I change the lyrics to “March on, March on. With hope in your heart. And you’ll never March alooooooone”. It all seems appropriate as we near the brighter foothills of new growth and warmer days. We march on together through the inevitable storms with the promise of the golden sky of springtime just over the horizon.

STRIKING AGAPANTHUS MIX

Over the fence • Are variegated plants an eyesore?

Digging deeper • Putting the spotlight on the biggest issues in gardening today

Container of the month • Delicate-looking alpines and hardy succulents make an attractive mini-landscape that will attract pollinators

Daucus carota ‘Dara’ • This wonderful relative of the carrot pays its way in any summer border – and it’s so easy to grow for indoor displays. Here, cut-flower grower Cel Robertson explains why it’s one bloom that everyone should try

TV special • As Gardeners’ World returns to our TVscreens this month, we’ve included a special section crammed with features from GW presenters. Plus, Monty shares radical plans for Longmeadow’s Cottage Garden (p38) and we hear from the programme’s Executive Producer about what’s to come (p41)

Rise of the roses • As we anticipate the new series of Gardeners’ World, Monty Don reveals why big changes are afoot in Longmeadow’s Cottage Garden this year
